UNDP works with the insurance industry (mutual, cooperative, and private sectors), together with government and other sectors, to develop a range of solutions for insurance and risk financing for countries across five key workstreams: inclusive insurance, risk financing, natural capital/risk, investment, and integration into development. These workstreams are supported by a standard set of activities across each that include governance, technology and innovation, vulnerability and empowerment, research and evidence.
Over time, the expected outcomes of this work is both an increase in usage of insurance and risk financing tools to tackle vulnerability, in order to protect communities and countries, and to inform development. This includes work on both supply and demand dynamics in countries, with significant work on legislation, regulation and institutional development.
UNDP’s Insurance and Risk Finance Flagship Facility is providing multiple layers of support for tackling COVID-19 now, and well into the future.
