Where we work

Biodiversity finance

UNDP works to integrate biodiversity considerations into various sectors, promoting sustainable practices and reducing negative impacts on biodiversity. Our efforts focus on three key areas:

  1. Strengthening Governance Frameworks at the landscape level,
  2. Supporting Market Transformations, and
  3. Fast-tracking National Biodiversity Strategy-Setting and Implementation.

Present in 41 countries, BIOFIN works with governments, civil society, communities and the private sector to catalyse investments in nature.

Finance solutions for biodiversity include:

  • Grants
  • Debt (green bonds)
  • Fiscal subsidies
  • Market-led approaches
  • Regulatory reform
  • Risk management (public guarantees for green investments)

Our core work areas, from increasing biodiversity finance to strengthening environmental governance, are responding to the current crisis of global nature loss. Leveraging our convening power, thought leadership, multi-sectoral expertise, and the UN’s largest portfolio of on-the-ground sustainable development programming and policy solutions, we’re supporting solutions that work for people and for planet.

Our flagship initiatives are the key programmes and vehicles that will enable us to mobilise partners and accelerate action to protect nature and unleash nature’s potential to create a more sustainable and equitable world.
