About

The ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development and the Fourth Preparatory Committee Session for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) will be held from 28 to 29 April and from 30 April to 1 May 2025 respectively at UN Headquarters in New York.

This year, the Forum assumes added importance in mobilizing momentum and concrete solutions on financing for development, feeding into the discussions on the outcome of FFD4.

The 2025 Forum will be livestreamed on UN Web TV.

Faith-based finance, particularly Islamic finance, holds significant potential to bridge the SDG financing gap. Islamic finance offers a unique alternative to other financing tools, based on the principles of ethical investment, risk-sharing, and social responsibility. It emphasizes collective funding for humanitarian, economic, social, and environmental goals,  aligned with the SDGs. 

This side event aims to highlight the potential of Islamic finance to advance the broader sustainable development agenda.

With over half of global income held by just 10% of the population — with the top 1% holding more wealth than the remaining 95%  — extreme inequality has become one of the defining crisis of our time. But inequality is not inevitable, and can be reversed by political decisions. This session will explore the centrality of reducing inequality to the Financing-for-Development agenda, with a focus on progressive taxation and effective taxation of high-net-worth individuals. Drawing on global and Global South experiences, the discussion will highlight how fair tax systems can foster economic resilience and social cohesion.

This side event aims to foster multistakeholder dialogue and identify concrete actions — such as strengthening debt-data transparency, mainstreaming state-contingent debt clauses, and enhancing capacity-building for debt management — that can be taken forward at the national, regional, and global levels. It will also explore the enablers of just and equitable development finance, and share ideas on lowering the cost of borrowing and providing comprehensive support for countries that, while solvent, face high debt-servicing costs.

This event builds on the momentum generated during the January 2025 Dialogue on Public Finance and the SDG. The 2024 Annual Report of UNDP's Tax for SDGs Initiative will be launched during this event.
